Christmas Break is here and I finally did some cleaning out of the Vandura. There was some Mystery Goo in the passenger side door well, which looks to be
polyurathane varnish
... My theory is that a quart of the stuff sat on the dash in the sun for a decade or so and the UV caused the container to fail.
Thanks to Dave the Car Guy , I was able to effectively track down new front door latch mechanisms, new, OEM, which I will replace. I hope to get the engine running and steam cleaned before Break is out. My first goal is to get the thing to move under its own power. The three-on-the-tree gearshift is totally inoperative.
My plan is to sandblast the rust and prime the areas.
That door well had resinous goo almost half an inch thick.
All surface rust; no rust-through.
Dash needs work; shifter totally inperative.
Very few wires or working parts by today’s standards.
Mystery Goo
All surface rust, fortunately. I can see how these vans would have rusted away completely in just a few winters.

Hey; long time, no see. I’m a bit concerned about overall build quality. Seems pretty tinny. I know someone tried to steal it and I’m pretty sure they were mystified by the shifter. I hope they didn’t destroy it.

They are very tinny in the body. If you want to make any long trips in it someday, I’d suggest copious amounts of sound deadening material. Mechanically these are pretty sturdy though. Although these vans do like to eat ball joints. I’d be sure to change those and the tie rod ends before making any big journeys.
Hopefully whatever the would be thieves broke is simple. I know jack squat about those mechanisms.

I am looking forward to sprucing up the interior a bit with some carpet and insulation. I am thinking along the lines of rebuilding the entire front end.

I think that’s a smart move.

What I’m after is something dependable and comfortable and practical, not some crazy customization. I have to go to the DMV and register it and I hope I’m not in for a rude awakening.

I think that’s a good and totally doable goal. Fix shifter, rebuild front end, replace all the rubber bits and hoses and belts, change all the fluids, fix the wiring, and you should have a nice driver. Then you can work on making it comfortable.

That’s my plan. Every bit of rubber door trim is falling off in chunks. As well, I’m wondering about the rubber around the windows.
How much misery do you think I’m in for at the DMV?

I have no idea for you. In Illinois, as long as you’ve got a title and $265ish, you’re golden. My local DMV is actually pretty friendly and efficient. There’s a lot not to like about Illinois, but registering cars ain’t one of them.
